Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infected or inflamed dental pulp, which is the soft tissue inside a tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp, cleaning, and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing the root canals to prevent reinfection.

Root canal treatment is typically recommended when a tooth’s pulp becomes infected or inflamed, often as a result of deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or repeated dental procedures on the tooth. The symptoms of a damaged or infected pulp can include tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, swelling or tenderness in the gums, and a pimple-like bump on the gums.

The root canal procedure itself typically involves the following steps:

Local anaesthesia: The dentist will numb the area around the affected tooth to reduce discomfort during the procedure.

Accessing the pulp: The dentist will make a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp.

Removing the damaged pulp: The dentist will use small tools to remove the damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth.

Cleaning and disinfecting: The dentist will clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth to remove any remaining debris and bacteria.

Filling and sealing: The dentist will fill the root canals with a rubber-like material and seal the opening to prevent reinfection.

Restoration: In many cases, a crown or other type of dental restoration may be placed over the treated tooth to provide added strength and protection.

Root canal treatment is typically performed under local anaesthesia, and patients can expect some sensitivity and discomfort in the treated tooth for a few days after the procedure. However, with proper care and attention, most patients experience long-lasting relief from tooth pain and other symptoms associated with infected or inflamed dental pulp.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a damaged or infected pulp, it is important to seek dental treatment as soon as possible to prevent further damage and to promote healing. Your dentist can help you determine the best course of treatment for your individual needs and goals.
